2020 Review - It's been quite a year!

Continuing Our Mission to Change The World Through Film.

JANUARY

First Screenings of The Upstanders

Our third film in Indieflix’s Mental Health Trilogy, The Upstanders, is a powerful documentary about resilience and the power of connection to end bullying. Arriving right before Covid glued us even closer to our devices, The Upstanders has helped young people reflect on and change their own behavior, as well as giving the strength to speak up to those who suffer in silence.

Everyone knows bullying is a problem.  But now I see it as a crisis.  I know everyone is always talking about Global Warming, but bullying is really the biggest issue we are facing right now, and an issue that I feel I can actually make a difference with.”

MARCH

Premiere of Nevertheless

We go behind the #MeToo and Time’s Up headlines to the heart-breaking and stirring stories of women who refuse to be victims. We follow 20-year, intimate stories of 7 individuals who have experienced and fought sexual harassment in the workplace or at school. From a writer’s assistant on a top TV show to a Tech CEO and 911 dispatcher, the film shines a light on how we can shift our culture to end harassment together. In December we were honored to have Tarana Burke, founder of the #MeToo Movement, join our panel for a powerful discussion following a live screening with the 3% Conference.

"I can count on one hand the number of times a documentary film has truly moved me. Sarah Moshman’s 'Nevertheless' highlights #MeToo in a way that hasn’t been done on film, and creates a transcendent experience for all who watch it. Bravo!”

MARCH

Virtual Delivery

Covid-19 wiped out all Indieflix’s in-person screenings overnight. Within a week we completely transformed how we reached communities, using our streaming capabilities to deliver dedicated virtual screenings for each client. Not only could schools, corporations and community leaders deliver the film to each audience member’s technology, we were also able to follow the film with panel discussions and Q&A. Since March we have hosted over 600 virtual screenings in more than 15 countries, streaming to small schools as well as globally-based conferences and corporations. Pandemic pressures have made Angst a critical mental health resource for both students and professionals, and virtual delivery has proved to be a stress-reducing way to engage, and start the conversation to get support.

OCTOBER

'RACE' in Production

2020 opened the world's eyes to this country's systemic and pervasive racial inequality. In a year where depression and anxiety have sky-rocketed, understanding has increased about the intense toll that racism has on mental health. RACE will address this head-on. As with our other films, RACE will engage through individual stories and experiences, exploring effective ways to examine our unconscious beliefs, and disrupt our own behavior, so that we can shift the trajectory now, and into the future. Appropriate for ages 10 and up, it will screen in community format to schools and corporations, together with panel discussions and follow-up curriculum. Produced and directed by Scilla Andreen and the Indieflix team, the target premiere date is October 2021.

NOVEMBER

Brand New Indieflix!

November 24, 2020 marked the Indieflix transformation. All aspects of the business were brought together under one welcoming roof, under the overarching vision to use film for positive change. Education remains central to this vision, but it also carries over to our streaming side. 'Kids In The Spotlight', a dedicated channel for films made by students in the foster care system, launches this Friday, December 18th. We started supporting independent film festivals and filmmakers by hosting virtual festivals in September, and this will continue into 2021. Our new tagline, “Feed Your Curiosity’ unites both Indieflix’s mission to provide content for independent thinkers, and the desire to dig deep into issues that affect everyone of us, and society as a whole. We hope that you love our new identity!

SEL Curriculum on the way

The positive  effects of Angst, LIKE and The Upstanders are about to get super-charged! From January 2021, each film will have a dedicated 8-week SEL curriculum, that translates key themes and tips from each film into practical, easy-to-implement discussion and exercises. The curriculum will help students convert learning into conscious, attitude-and-action based practices that improve each student's, and overall community, resilience and empathy. The curricula can be delivered by film, or as a 24 week, full school year package that integrates all three films. They are written, approved and are now in production - we'll be thrilled to share them with you from mid January!
