New York is one of the fastest, most dynamic places in the world. At the lowest level of its urban landscape lies a dark and frightening place, seemingly pulled from the pages of a macabre science fiction novel. A place inhabited by “mole people.” The existence of a fragmented, outcast people is real, and they live on the fringes of society in New York’s underbelly – the dark, winding tunnels of the city’s subway system. Without a map or blueprint, the film crew investigates their stories, following leads based on fact and fiction, urban myth and reality. Only when ready did those living below the busy streets of New York reveal themselves. As with any society, this one too has a code of conduct and ethics that considers theft from other underground dwellers more serious than murder – after all, when you have so little, what you do have is priceless.
