The paradoxes of history are played out in the story of two lives. Born in eastern Poland, ten year old Janina is deported to Kazakhstan at the outset of the Second Word War. Back on a wave of post-war repatriations, she settles in the city of Szczecin, in a house vacated by relocated Germans – Annemarie’s family. Who is the invader, who bears the guilt, who is the victim? This narrative of memory and image is as fluid as borders during wartime.
