It is 2004. Saddam Hussein was recently captured and America's efforts to rebuild Iraq are at their peak. There is civil unrest between Iraqis who see the United States as “liberators” and those who resent American interference. Bomb explosions and calls for prayer ascend into the sky in unison. Amidst all this, life is still going on as normally as it can for the people caught in the crossfire. Marwa is an educated Iraqi girl serving as an interpreter to Captain Devin Tobin, the soldier in charge of the American effort to rebuild and bring peace to Rodwania village, while her father, Salam, is one of the chief Iraqi townspeople behind the re-building of the village. But for Marwa being close to Captain Tobin is more than just a job. Devin is the first man she has been allowed to get so close to. Marwa’s world is about to come tumbling down when villagers begin to question Marwa and Devin’s closeness, and the imminent redeployment of the American soldiers in the village to Jordan threaten Marwa and Devin’s newfound closeness. Marwa and Devin suddenly realize what they are about to lose. What will Marwa choose? Will Devin have the courage to confront her family? Will Salam's relationship with a close collaborator and good friend change? Will Jordan be a place for reunion? Life's one decision will strain all the links in this family's chain.
