The scenery beyond is deader still.

And unexplained phenomenon has caused the recently dead to reanimate and seek the flesh of the living. In a matter of weeks, the walking dead outnumber their living counterparts. Those who survived the initial apocalyptic events are now forced to defend themselves against hordes of the undead and, often times, the living as well.

"Broken Road" is the first short film in the Deadscapes series by writer / director Kristofer Velasquez. In this installment, an unlikely trio of survivors must decide whether to trust in each other for survival or let deception seal their fates. A militant vigilante-type named Eric has survived the zombie chaos armed with a gun and an RV camper. Greg and Jesse encounter Eric after their vehicle breaks down in a land overrun by the dead. "Broken Road" takes us on a dizzying trip of death, undeath, murder, and lies.

This short film was written, shot, edited, and released in 3 months. There was no budget or crew. The only thing that fueled this production was a passion for filmmaking and an ironic sense of compensation after a failed 2 and a half year dream project called Circling the Drain (www.circling-the-drain.com). After spending over $10,000 of his own money on a first attempt at a feature-length zombie film, director Kristofer Velasquez felt the need to release at least something after the previous project crashed and burned. Deadscapes was born out of this train wreck of an experience. With renewed motivation, Velasquez tackled a project completely on his own (no crew or money) and wore all the hats to get something made. Broken Road showed some promise of better things to come in future projects. With the intention of being a series, Broken Road starts the collection with a lot of heart, hopefully making up for what it lacks technically.

Broken Road is a plot-based tale in the land of walking dead. Using George Romero's template, the story surrounds ands focuses on people rather than zombies. In a sense, the zombies are merely the backdrop, used to accentuate the decisions and interactions of the characters. In a genre often parodied and mocked, Broken Road and the entire Deadscapes series intends on breaking the monotony of gratuitous gore and violence for its own sake and the lack of an coherent story (or at least one that takes the focus off the zombies themselves).

This episode displays an all-too likely scenario of an emergency bringing together people unlikely to cross paths in the normal world. Their conflicts, be it personal or cultural or even religious, are heightened by the sense of danger that the zombies lend to the story. In the end of the world, how selfish would the selfish get? Would you kill to save your own life? Or betray a loved one to escape? These are all underlying issues addressed by the core story of Broken Road.
