Veiled in a back lit silhouette, his voice altered, a young man nervously tells his story: Tony is fond of his girlfriend, getting high, and playing on the internet. When he meets his friend Kaleam to buy a large block of hash, Tony unknowingly falls into a terrorist surveillance operation. Using listening devices and high tech tracking systems, the team taps into his cell phone and links to his electronic toll pass. Back home, Tony and Jessica indulge in their own private party. While they drink, smoke and pop pills, a covert extraction team prepares for a raid.
In a dank and grimy room, Tony wakes from a drug induced sleep to find himself the subject of an interrogation by unknown agents. Confused by their questions, Tony demands a lawyer, only to be told he’s not under arrest. As the interrogators become more and more aggressive in their tactics, the lines protecting civil liberties and human rights become blurred with the effort to protect the very same liberties and rights

This is a fictional representation of what I see to be a possible reality. I was disturbed to know that through there were many well established fears from 9/11, certain entities were able to push through an act that up to then had not gained support from either side of the congressional aisle. Problems in the title it self “To deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and around the world, to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools, and for other purposes”. What other purposes? Questioning the possible loop hopes in the act more than questioning the act itself. After registering the outline and script large media stories started popping up validating these questions. Things like wireless domestic phone tapping, secrete prisons, torture and stories of big brother in the name of national defense. When London (with its 5 cameras to 1 person ratio) admitted in a Discovery Channel special that this did not stop terrorists but helped to identify the bombers as well as helped in many other criminal cases. It seemed that reality was closely mimicking our script. I wanted to address these things while not making the lead character squeaky clean but instead addressing the gray area that life in America is. Today it’s a stupid kid, tomorrow it maybe a regular civil right that has been deemed illegal. Remember this is only fiction, the plain white van at the end of your street is only a repairmen and the Wal-Mart camera wouldn’t be watching you?
